Exide Battery uses Powrhitch for submarine battery
assembly
GNB Technologies,
a subsidiary of Exide Battery, manufactures power storage batteries
which go into U. S. Naval nuclear submarines. These batteries are
built on what is known as a building stand which is a very heavy and
sturdy steel framed cart mounted on rolling casters.
|
 |
The picture on the left shows a typical building
stand with a partially completed battery. Since the battery is
composed of lead plates, the overall weight of these building stands
becomes quite heavy as the manufacturing process moves ahead. Weights
approach 4,000 pounds. These units were being moved by employees
hand pushing them between the various stages of the manufacturing
process.
Exide contacted Power Wheel USA for assistance in finding a solution
for the human element involved in moving the building stands. |
|
Power Wheel studied all
aspects of connecting our equipment to the building stands and came up
with the proposed design on the right.
The task was to devise a connecting point which would not interfere
with the building of the battery. |
 |
|
 |
Our lifting lugs were
mounted in the position shown on the left and once again, we were able
to substitute cost effective machine power to accomplish the task and
remove the human element with its associated injury risks. |
For this application, a 10 RPM drive transmission and soft start
control card was chosen along with foam filled solid core tires. |
